We understand that maths is a life skill and can also help learners become ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world by providing them with tools to analyse data critically, enabling them to develop informed views on social, political, economic and environmental issues. It encourages clarity of thinking, allowing learners to understand and make reasoned decisions. We teach maths and numeracy both discretely and then these skills are applied across the different areas of learning across the curriculum.
WhiteRose
We teach maths using the White Rose Scheme of work to support our teaching of maths and numeracy. The White Rose SOL takes the main learning objectives from the national curriculum and breaks them down into teaching blocks across each term. Time is built in for maths assessments and for recapping at the end of the term. The topics into which the curriculum is broken down are known as the White Rose small steps. The White Rose Maths curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in mathematics. Students will gain a deep understanding of mathematics and enjoy solving mathematical problems with this course. The primary curriculum puts a significant emphasis on mathematical skills, curriculum content has to be well sequenced in order to promote a depth of understanding.
Please visit the White Rose Website to look in more detail at the Scheme of Learning https://whiteroseeducation.com/parent-pupil-resources/maths
There is a parents page for ways to support at home and lessons you can do at home that follow the teaching scheme and support your child's learning in school, please click the following link for free downloadable workbooks to use at home. https://whiteroseeducation.com/parent-pupil-resources/maths/free-downloads
CAP Approach
White Rose follows a CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) which is an important tool in teaching mathematics.
Concrete | Using physical objects to make sense of and use to help solve maths problems. |
Pictorial | Using drawings as representations of concrete objects to model problems. |
Abstract | Abstract is the “symbolic” stage, where children use abstract symbols to model problems. Students will not progress to this stage until they have demonstrated that they have a solid understanding of the concrete and pictorial stages of the problem. |
Home Learning
Each week, teachers set homework on Maths Shed https://www.mathshed.com/en-gb/ MathShed provides teaching tools that follow and complement White Rose Maths as well as a comprehensive range of online games and learning tools. The game aspect of MathShed ensures children are engaged and eager to practise critical maths skills. The low-stakes games, quizzes and reward systems ensure that children find learning maths fun. The games can be played in class or assigned as practice outside of the classroom, making them perfect for in-school learning, homework or a hybrid model. Please make sure your child is engaging with work set on Maths Shed at home. This is the same login for spellings also.
