Holy Week and Easter - Observe, Reflect and Celebrate tasks
WEEK 3 home learning will resume on 20th April
It is important over the next 2 weeks that children take a break from their excellent efforts at home, keeping up with their weekly home learning tasks. As a Catholic school we are moving into the most important period of our Church's liturgical year, so we would like children to complete the following activities and reflect upon the significance of the events during Holy Week, leading to the celebrations on Easter Sunday.
(links/resources will be added below)
Activity 1 - Observe - Events of Holy week
write about the key events of Holy Week, which lead to Jesus' Resurrection, in order
1. Palm Sunday
2. Maundy Thursday (Last Supper)
3. Good Friday
4. Holy Saturday - How do Christians remember the day that followed Good Friday?
5. Easter Sunday
Extension challenge - What happened to Jesus on the days after Palm Sunday, leading up to Maundy Thursday?
Choose from one of the following:
- Google slides (submit finished work to google classwork assignment)- create separate slides explaining each of the events of Holy Week and insert images, text and symbols - How do you think Jesus and his Disciples were feeling at each of these times?
- Thinking maps powerpoint - flow map 5 parts of Holy week using text and images
- Collage/sketch/paint the events of Holy week - adding keywords around each image to describe how Jesus and his Disciples may have been feeling as these events unfolded.
Activity 2 - Reflect - The Stations of the cross
- run the powerpoint and sit with your family to reflect upon the stations of the cross.
- read the 'notes' in the powerpoint to carry out a short service at home - you may want to give different roles to family members to allow you all to reflect upon the challenges faced by Jesus.
resource - Primary Stations of the cross Cafod powerpoint
Activity 3 - Celebrate on Easter Sunday
This final task is one which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday and reminds us that death is not the end. As the stone at the entrance to Jesus' tomb was rolled away, think about how Jesus is an everlasting power and presence in our lives every day.
Create your own celebration cross, using different colours and symbols linked to Easter celebration. You may also want to write a prayer of thanks as Jesus walks with us in our everyday lives following his resurrection.

Learning Log Homework - Biodiversity Next week is Science Week!
Homework – Get creative and enter the British Science Association’s annual poster competition. You can make your poster about whatever version of ’Our diverse planet’ you like and enter our UK-wide competition with the chance to win some exciting prizes.
Investigate and imagine ‘Our diverse planet’ and everything that makes it special.
Here are some topic ideas to get you started: Why not think about biodiversity? From the diversity in your own garden, to the diversity at the very bottom of the ocean, research all the amazing creatures and organisms that live on our planet. The diversity of science and STEM subjects.
Have a think about all the diverse ways that science affects our lives and who you know that uses science every day. Is there science in baking and cooking? What about making a film or taking a picture? Or how about operating planes and cars? Remember that science is everywhere, you just have to look for it!
Think about the other kinds of diversity our planet contains – from the variety of the molecules that make up essential parts of life, to the different ways our towns and cities are built, and the variation of people’s tastes and interests. Our planet is unique, but why not investigate what makes it different from others. It’s up to you on what you research and what you put on your poster.

Learning Log Homework -Eisteddfod 2020
There will be various home/school competitions for your children to enter as part of our St. David’s Day celebrations this year. Please could you ensure that all competition entries are brought into school to be judged by Monday 24th February 2020.
Children are welcome to enter as many competitions as they wish, and winning entries will be announced during our Eisteddfod celebrations on Friday 28th February (Key Stage 2).
The children are able to choose which competition/s to enter. They are welcome to enter all competitions open to them. There will be house points awarded for every competition entry. The winning entries will receive house points, certificates and a special welsh prize.
The competitions are as follows: Whole School Competitions:
Welsh Learner of the Year-The children are encouraged to use what they have been learning in school to showcase their knowledge and understanding of the Welsh language. They may choose to write some phrases or sentences, a letter, conversation or celebrity profile in Welsh. The children must also write a paragraph in English explaining why they think they should be ‘Welsh Learner of the Year’. There is a very useful online dictionary on the website bbclearnwelsh which will be helpful when the children are writing in Welsh.
3D Modelling Competition – Children are encouraged to make a 3D model of something which represents Wales for them. Children may use whichever means of media they wish and the topic is broad to encourage creativity.
Cookery Competition - Children are encouraged to cook something which is a traditional Welsh recipe or depicts Wales to them.
Young Performer Competition- As part of our Eisteddfod this year we are also encouraging the children to showcase their talents. Auditions will take place in class on Thursday 21st February. Two children will then be chosen to represent their class during our Eisteddfod celebration. The children may like to prepare a song or dance, recite a poem or play a musical instrument. The children are also encouraged to wear traditional welsh costume or a full welsh sporting kit such as rugby or football.
The following Key Stage 2 additional competitions have been decided upon through pupil voice sessions: Key Stage 2 Competitions: The Advantages of Learning Welsh – Children to present the advantages of learning Welsh, using Google slides or Google sites. Please consider the following questions: Why is learning Welsh important? Why is learning Welsh a lifelong skill? What are the benefits of learning Welsh? If children decide to use the tools available on Hwb it is then their responsibility to download the file and save it into the Eisteddfod entry folder in their pupil folders on Monday 24th February. If any support is needed to do this, please see class teachers. Alternatively, competition entries completed on the computer be burnt onto a disc and handed to class teachers
A Welsh Song - To write and perform a song highlighting the advantages of learning Welsh. The song could include Welsh words and phrases. Auditions will take place at lunchtime on Tuesday 25th February in the Year 6 classroom. Please ensure that all entries are solely completed by the children themselves. We look forward to seeing the fantastic contributions which will play a vital part in celebrating the heritage and culture of Wales during our Eisteddfod.

*DO NOT FORGET* In the newsletter there is a rugby world cup immersion day on Monday 23rd of September. On Monday the 23rd of September 2019, St Philip Evans will be hosting a Rugby World Cup Day, to kick-start the Rugby World Cup campaign alongside healthy and fit week. Pupils can wear either a red t shirt or a wales rugby shirt. Pupils can also bring a small red badge or scarf to support wales. This is entirely optional, if pupils do not wear one of these items they must still come into school with normal correct uniform. Pupils must however, not wear shirts of other colours and other nations, as we want everybody to support our national team. At lunch time on this day there will be a rugby skills session with the rugby team from 12:30 – 13:00 on the school field for years 3-6. There will be a rugby world cup themed homework so please check your class page website for more details.
Learning Logs: This week for your homework you can choose from one of the following options: 1). Make a model of a rugby ball to celebrate Wales in the Rugby World cup. This could be decorated with anything Welsh and rugby related.
2). Next week we are also celebrating our Context for learning Fame, Fire and Fortune, in preparation for this you could design and make a Thinking Hat. The topic is all about the Stuart period and we will be learning all about this historical period. *Please do not make or wear a costume on Tuesday as we will also be having our individual photos taken.

Learning Logs: Roald Dahl research
In order to prepare for Dahlicious day next week we would like you to carry out some research on the life of Roald Dahl. You may present this as a poster, character profile or piece of writing in your learning log books.
Success criteria:
Where was Roald Dahl born? What did Roald Dahl do during his early life? How did Roald Dahl become an author? What are Roald Dahl's biggest successes?
FRIDAY - DAHLICIOUS DAY & Y4 SWIMMING LESSONS BEGIN Year 4 are beginning their swimming lessons every afternoon (Mon-Fri) starting this week (9th Sept) Please ensure your child has all swimming equipment in a separate bag and £1 for a locker. - As it is Roald Dahl day Friday, children are encouraged to dress up, but parents may want to consider the practical element of costumes that will fit inside a locker.
