This week we have been learning about the resurrection of Jesus leading to the celebration of Easter:

The day of Jesus’ crucifixion was coming to an end, and Joseph, a rich man, hurried to see Pilate. He said to him “Sir, I come to request my master’s body for burial.” Joseph took the body and wrapped it carefully in a clean linen cloth. Then he laid the body in his own tomb, one that had been freshly cut out of a rock. He had a heavy stone rolled across the entrance and left. Mary Magdelelne and the other Mary were nearby, keeping faithful watch.

The next day, Pilate received more visitors, chief priests and religious leaders. He asked them “You have come to see me about Jesus of Nazareth I suppose?” They told Pilate “Sir, while he was alive, Jesus claimed he would rise again after three days. We suggest you place a guard on the tomb.”

He thought about what they had said and told them “Take a guard and seal the tomb as well as you possibly can!”

First thing in the morning on Sunday, Mary Magdelene and the other Mary hurried to the tomb. They felt the ground shake and tremble. A man appeared in front of them and said “Do not be afraid! You are looking for Jesus- but he is risen! Here is the empty space where he lay! Give this message to the others. He is going to Galilee, where you will see him.”

It was now the third day since Jesus’ death, but Mary still cried. “Woman, why do you cry?” The man asked. Mary cried “They have taken away my lord and I don’t know where they have put him!”

The man asked her again “Woman why do you cry? Who is it that you are looking for? Mary thought that it must be the gardener, working in the early morning. She said to him “Sir, if you have taken him away please tell me, so I can bring him back.”

The man looked at her and said “Mary”.

She immediately realised who she was talking to and recognised the man. It was Jesus. ”Rabi!” she said.

Jesus turned to her and said “I have not yet gone to the father. Go and tell the brothers I am going back to my father and your father, to my God and your God.”

They ran as quickly as they could back to the disciples to tell them all they had witnessed.
