Reading in Year 2/3

Reading is a key focus in Year 2/3, and we work hard to ensure that all children develop a love of reading while continuing to build their fluency and comprehension skills.

Most pupils are currently reading from a range of book bands, which are carefully matched to their individual reading ability. Children change their books regularly and are encouraged to read frequently both at school and at home. Throughout the year, we aim to develop pupils' confidence, fluency and understanding, and we hope to support some children in progressing to become free readers by the end of Year 3.

Some pupils continue to access Monster Phonics sessions to strengthen their phonics knowledge and reading skills. Monster Phonics is a proven systematic synthetic phonics programme that uses colour coding and character cues to make phonics easier to understand and remember.

During Monster Phonics sessions, children:

  • Learn and recognise phonic sounds and how they are represented in words.
  • Blend sounds together to read words, helping to build fluency, accuracy and confidence.
  • Follow a structured progression, moving from simpler sounds and patterns to more complex phonics knowledge through regular practice.

These sessions provide targeted support and help children become confident, successful readers who are ready for the next stage of their learning.
